Eating more protein and absorbing less of it

You decided to take protein seriously. Everywhere you looked, that was the message: eat more protein, build it into every meal, you are probably not getting enough. So you did. Eggs at breakfast, chicken or steak at dinner, a shake in the afternoon when there was no time to cook. Bigger portions, more often. It felt like the responsible thing, the grown-up thing, the change that was finally going to help.

But the meals sit heavy. An hour after a big protein dinner you feel over-full in a way that does not pass, a little queasy, faintly bloated, as if the food has stopped halfway and is just waiting there. And underneath all that effort, you are still tired. The energy you were promised has not arrived. You are doing more of the thing everyone said to do, and somehow feeling less for it.

Protein is hard work to break down, and if your stomach acid and enzymes are running low, a big protein meal sits there half-digested, which is the heaviness, and you absorb far less than you ate, which is the tiredness. The fix is rarely more protein. It is supporting how you break food down, eating more calmly, and often smaller portions spaced through the day so your body can keep up.

Eating protein and absorbing protein are not the same thing.

Protein is the hardest of your foods to break down. A piece of steak or a scoop of shake does not become something your body can use until it has been taken apart into much smaller pieces, and that taking-apart is real work. It needs a good amount of stomach acid to get started, and it needs the right enzymes further along to finish the job.1 When those are strong, protein moves through, gets broken down, and the goodness in it actually reaches you. When they are low, the food sits. It lingers in your stomach longer than it should, and that heavy, full, queasy feeling is the meal waiting rather than moving on.

So the amount on your plate is only half the story. The other half is whether your body can break it down and take it in. You can eat a great deal of protein and absorb a disappointing amount of it, because much of that good food passes through only half undone.2 That is the quiet frustration underneath the bloating: you are paying for protein you are not really getting. The benefit you were expecting is sitting in the gap between what you ate and what your body could use.

And it tends to feed itself. A big protein meal on a digestion that is already struggling sits heavier still. The heaviness makes the next meal feel like a chore, so you reach for another shake instead, quick and cold and gulped at your desk, which is one of the harder ways to ask a tired stomach to work. The heaviness, the bloating, the tiredness that does not lift are not three separate problems. They are one pattern, going round.

None of this means protein is the enemy. I am not going to tell you to eat less of it for the sake of it. Protein matters, and plenty of people thrive on a good amount of it. The question is never simply am I eating enough protein but can my body actually use what I am giving it right now. Those are different questions, and the second one is the one that has been left out.

This is the part I care about most in how I work. When someone comes to me eating well and still feeling heavy and flat, we do not start by adding more. We look at how you are digesting. How strong things are at the top, whether meals are being broken down or just sitting, how you are eating as much as what you are eating. Often the changes are gentler than people expect. Eating more calmly, sitting down, slowing the pace. Sometimes smaller portions spaced through the day rather than one large load your stomach has to face all at once. Sometimes a little support for the acid and enzymes that have been running low, for a defined while, until things find their footing again.

So if you have upped your protein and feel worse rather than better, you have not failed at eating well. You have learned something true about your own digestion. The answer is rarely more. It is helping your body make use of what is already there. If your meals keep sitting heavy and the tiredness keeps not lifting, that is worth taking seriously, and worth understanding properly.
