You read that beans, lentils and chickpeas were one of the best things you could put on your plate. Fibre, plant protein, the wholesome staple of every healthy meal. So you started adding them. A scoop of lentils into the soup, chickpeas on the salad, a bean chilli on Sunday. You felt good about it. You were doing the right thing.
Then, about an hour after lunch, your stomach starts to swell. By mid-afternoon you are uncomfortably full of wind, cramping, distended in a way that does not match the size of the meal. You feel like you have done something wrong. You have not. You have just met a food doing exactly what it was always going to do.
Beans bloat you because their fibre feeds the bacteria in your gut, and the gas those bacteria give off as they feed is what you feel as wind and swelling. It is rarely a reason to stop eating them. For most people it comes down to smaller portions, soaking and cooking them well, and building the amount up slowly, and for a gut that is very reactive, settling it first and bringing beans back gently.
The bloating is not a sign you have done something wrong. It is your gut showing you how it is coping with that fibre right now.
A lot of the fibre in beans and lentils passes through your small intestine more or less untouched, because your own body cannot break it down.1 It arrives lower down, in the large intestine, where trillions of bacteria are waiting. They can break it down, and they do, with enthusiasm. That is genuinely a good thing. It is one of the reasons fibre matters so much. But when bacteria feed, they produce gas as a by-product. The feast and the wind are the same event, seen from two sides.
So whether beans help you or flatten you depends less on the bean and more on the state of the gut they land in. A settled, well-populated gut takes the fibre, feeds steadily, and you barely notice. A sensitive gut, or one that is not used to much fibre, reacts hard. Sometimes the wrong bacteria are doing the feasting. Sometimes there is simply too much arriving at once for the system to handle calmly. Either way, the bloating is information, not a verdict on beans.
Which is why the answer is rarely “never eat them again”. For a lot of people it is about amount. A heaped bowl all at once is a very different ask from a couple of spoonfuls stirred through something else. It is about preparation too. Soaking dried beans properly, draining them, cooking them long and well, all of this breaks down some of the harder parts before they ever reach your gut.2 And it is about pace. A gut that has not seen much fibre for years cannot be asked to handle a lot of it overnight. Build up slowly and it often learns.3
For some people, though, the gut needs settling first. If things are quite reactive, or have been for a long time, piling on more fibre can feel like shouting into an already noisy room. In that case I would rather quieten the room, understand what is driving the sensitivity, and then bring beans back in gently once there is more room to handle them.
This is the part I care about most in how I work. I am not interested in telling you beans are good or bad, because that question has no useful answer. The real questions are how much, prepared how, and how is your gut right now. Three things, and all three are personal. The same bowl of lentils can be nourishing for one person and miserable for another, and neither of them is doing anything wrong.
When we work together I want to understand your gut as it actually is today, not as a chart says it should be. What you are eating, how much, how it is prepared, and what your body does with it. From there we can decide whether beans need shrinking, slowing, better cooking, or a pause while we settle things underneath. It is a conversation, not a rule.
So if beans have been leaving you bloated, you have not failed at healthy eating. You have learned something true about your own gut. That is a good place to start from, not a reason to give up on a food that, in the right amount and at the right time, has a lot to offer you.
